Medical Marijuana
What's the deal with Medical Marijuana?
In 1972, after reviewing the scientific
evidence, the National Commission on Marijuana
and Drug Abuse concluded that while marijuana
was not entirely safe, its dangers had been
grossly overstated.
In 1995, based on thirty years of scientific
research editors of the British medical
journal Lancet concluded that "the
smoking of medical marijuana, even long
term, is not harmful to health."
The Institute of Medicine's 1999 report
on medical marijuana stated, "The accumulated
data indicate a potential therapeutic value
for cannabinoid drugs, particularly for
symptoms such as pain relief, control of
nausea and vomiting, and appetite stimulation."
Clinical neurologists and researchers feel
that marijuana might provide relief for
the following:
- Migraine
- Neuropathic pain
- Post-amputation pain
- Neuropathy
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Multiple sclerosis
- Nausea of cancer chemotherapy
- AIDS wasting
- Motion sickness
- Menstrual cramps
- Glaucoma
In a recent, more carefully conducted study,
researchers found no evidence of brain abnormality
in monkeys that were forced to inhale the
equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarettes
every day for a year. If monkeys can handle
it, I am sure us humans can!
The claim that marijuana kills brain cells
is based on a speculative report dating
back a quarter of a century that has never
been supported by any scientific study.
Medical marijuana is just what the doctor
ordered.
Since 1996, eleven states have legalized
medical marijuana use: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI,
ME, NV, OR, RI, VT and WA. A report released
Monday by a marijuana public policy analyst
contends that the market value of pot produced
in the United States exceeds $35 billion.
Nationwide, the estimated cannabis production
of $35.8 billion exceeds corn ($23 billion),
soybeans ($17.6 billion) and hay ($12.2
billion).
Let's all do our part and continue to grow
medical marijuana for all who need it.
